Resident-Only Restrictions
Some states honor the Arizona CWP only if the permit holder is an Arizona resident. If you hold a non-resident Arizona CWP, the following states may not honor your permit: Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. Always verify with the destination state before traveling.
Requirements
- Be at least 21 years old (or 19 for active military)
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
- Not be a prohibited possessor under state or federal law
- Not have been convicted of a felony (unless rights restored)
- Not be under indictment for a felony offense
- Not have been adjudicated mentally incompetent or committed to a mental institution
- Not be an unlawful user of or addicted to marijuana or any controlled substance
- Complete a firearms training course recognized by Arizona DPS
- Non-residents may apply — Arizona issues non-resident permits by mail
Step-by-Step Application Process
Complete Required Training
Complete a firearms training course recognized by Arizona DPS. An NRA Basic Pistol Course or equivalent qualifies. The course must cover safe handling, storage, and legal aspects of firearm use.
Gather Required Documents
You will need:
- Training certificate (original or certified copy)
- Valid driver license or state-issued ID (photocopy)
- Two recent passport-style photographs
- Completed Arizona CWP application form
Get Fingerprinted
Obtain one complete set of fingerprints on an FBI-standard fingerprint card (FD-258). You can get fingerprinted at any law enforcement agency, sheriff office, or authorized fingerprinting service. The card must be clear and legible.
Complete the Application

Mail Your Application Package
Mail the complete application package to Arizona DPS, Concealed Weapons Permit Unit. Include: the completed application form, fingerprint card, training certificate, two photos, and a $60 check or money order payable to Arizona DPS.
Background Check & Processing
Arizona DPS will run a background check through state and federal databases. Processing typically takes approximately 75 business days.
Receive Your Permit
Your Arizona CWP will be mailed to the address on your application. The permit is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
